Luísa, Jörn and Mafalda invite you to see a new photo every day, usually taken in The Netherlands, and occasionally somewhere else. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to comment :-)
Cool silhouette and nice shadows! Is this an old photo (autumn? Low-resolution?)????? Any thoughts on how to deal with Nazi-Monuments as the Olympia-stadion???
this is a photo from the archives, from two years ago, i guess. it was taken in winter actually! arround us - still summer in the netherlands, so it says the calendar.. this shot was taken during a pre-smeltpunt photographic expedition to berlin. Mafalda and me decided to take some shots of the controversial olympiastadion. the stadium and spaces arround are very photogenic indeed, but once you get there is impossible to forget its legacy - its architecture, symetry, statues, lay out of spaces take you back immediately to the infamous nazi olympics. apparently there has been a lot of debate about what to do with it in previous years. finally, it was decided to renovate it. although it has been (little) modified and used for many modern sport events it still carries its symbolism. it was indeed an icon of hitler's campaign and a synonym of his ambition. if the aim is to erase from memory that "splendorous" olympic event then it should have been torn down completely. people who go visit will always ask where the fuehrer sat and imagine in place what they saw from Leni Riefenstahl's film; if the aim is to employ a useful facility (and to take advantage from what has been built in the past by the people) then it is better to keep it. in my opinion, it was a good decision to keep it, renovate it and continue using it, however it appears to me that too many marks where kept. also, a good sugestion i heard, would be to change its name to something like "freedom stadium".
